Lewis Hamilton: ‘I lost faith in the system for a while’ | Motorsport

The British driver has never seriously considered a goodbye after missing out on his eighth world title. “Considering whether or not to continue is a normal mental process after each season,” said Hamilton. “And now, of course, the developments in Abu Dhabi added a significant factor. I’ve loved this sport all my life, but there was a time when I lost faith in the system. But I am determined to come back stronger, feeling fresh and leaving the negative energy behind.”

Hamilton went offline for a while and said he enjoyed the time with his family. The seven-time world champion thought he would write history in Abu Dhabi, but was overtaken by Max Verstappen on the last lap after the safety car was brought in earlier than expected.

Motorsports federation FIA announced on Thursday a changed structure with regard to race management. Michael Masi has also left as race director. Hamilton: ,,It’s good to see the FIA taking steps. Now we have to see that the changes actually come and that the rules are followed correctly. We cannot change the past. We just have to make sure that this can never happen again in sport, that this does not happen to anyone again.”

Hamilton also says he is looking forward to a new battle with Verstappen. “All this has nothing to do with him. A driver makes good use of it when there are developments like these. He is a great competitor, I have no problem with him. This year we will continue our battle on the track.”
