Lenzing receives EU Ecolabel for fiber production in Indonesia

The Austrian fiber manufacturer Lenzing has received certification from the internationally recognized EU Ecolabel for its viscose fibers (PT. South Pacific Viscose) produced at the Purwakarta site in Indonesia, which therefore meet high environmental standards.

Lenzing AG has invested more than 100 million euros since 2021 in switching to special viscose and certification. Another goal of the conversion was a significant reduction in emissions in order to reduce group-wide CO2 emissions per ton of product sold by 50 percent by 2030 and to produce climate-neutral production by 2050. In addition, the Indonesian location has recently started receiving electricity from renewable energies and is continuing to push forward the switch to biomass.

In addition to the production of Lenzing Ecovero for textiles and fibers of the Veocel brand for nonwovens applications, it is planned to also produce Lenzing Ecovero Black fibers at the Purwakarta site in the future, which, thanks to the spin-dyeing process, require less energy and water in the textile chain and thus also have a lower CO2 emissions. footprint in their life cycle as a textile product.

“We are working hard to make our industries more sustainable and to drive the transformation of the textile business model from a linear to a circular economy model. I am therefore very pleased that we have now received the EU Ecolabel, which once again confirms our sustainability performance. Through our investments in Indonesia and other Lenzing locations worldwide, we are in an even better position to meet the growing demand for specialty fibers with low environmental impact,” comments Stephan Sielaff, CEO of the Lenzing Group, in a press release.
