Oberdorf demands more courage from DFB team

At the European Championship, Lena Oberdorf was missing due to her injury from last year. Now she spoke about that from the DFB team-and what needs to be better.
After the narrow semi-finals of the DFB women at the European Championship in Switzerland, Lena Oberdorf found significant words. The midfielder of FC Bayern sees the team on the right track, but also demands more courage.
“We know exactly what we have to work on and what has to happen in the next few years, that we will really attack completely again and continue to play for the titles,” said the national player in the ZDF sports studio.
The 23-year-old had missed the tournament due to injury. After her cruciate ligament tear a year ago, Oberdorf recently returned to the square. In the European Championship review, she particularly emphasizes the team’s commitment. There is a team in memory for them who thrown themselves into every duel, tried everything and showed a lot of heart on the pitch.
Against defending champion Spain was only over in the extension for the German team – 0: 1 was the final score. From Oberdorf’s point of view, however, it became clear what the playful area was still aware of. “Against Spain it was noticed that we had relatively little ball possession,” she said. Oberdorf explained: “We already have a team with many good gamblers who can also play football. We have to have the courage to keep the ball and play out opportunities and not rely on the fact that we can defend things well away.”
In addition to the tactical further development, the midfielder also addressed the youth work. In her view, improved training can help promote more talents nationwide. Oberdorf said: “If you improve in training in Germany, you bring out more and more talents and can draw from a larger pool.” At the same time, she emphasized that the current team had a good quality and pointed out that coach Christian Wück has not been in office for long and that a lot still had to be established. This is a strong sign for the EM result achieved.
On Friday Oberdorf had given her comeback in the FC Bayern jersey. After over a year break, she was back on the pitch for the first time at the Munich’s test game. After that, she was optimistic: “I had an extremely hard press ball, so I think it is holding.”
