When I talk about SMEs, conversations usually concentrate on multiple external and urgent challenges. All important, although there is a less visible dimension that we rarely name and can make a difference.

A SME that does not learn repeat mistakes which can cost the life of the company. Therefore, beyond the balances, the key is in the ability of a team to transform each experience – hexite or failure – in shared knowledge that enhances what is coming.

What does it mean?
It is not about sending someone to a course every so often or accumulate certificates. A continuous learning culture implies creating an environment where everyone – different managers and collaborators – constantly train to listen, reflect, experiment and improve. Turn the day to day a living laboratory.

Why and why is it so important for SMEs today?
The context changes faster than the structures: what seemed enough a year ago today is no longer: people stay where they feel they grow and develop; Together they discover that collective learning enhances adaptation capacity and when a team learns together makes more agile, creative and resilient.

How to start building it?
– Convert each result not expected into an opportunity to improve.
– Continuous feedback and feedforward: talk on time and not wait for the crisis.
– Reflection spaces: dedicate a specific and efficient space after each project or experience to review what worked and what can we improve.- Lead with questions: transform the “I have the answer” into a “What do you see that I am not seeing?”.
– Celebrate improvement: recognize when someone changes a practice and achieves impact.

The new SME leader role
In this model, the owner ceases to be the “Sabelotodo” and becomes a learning facilitator that shows vulnerability, asks for feedback, opens spaces to innovation inspires confidence and releases the potential of its people.

In a country of permanent changes the future of an SME transcends immediate profitability and is strengthened in the ability to learn faster than the context that challenges it. ”
