Lea Schüller’s career has stalled. Now the goalscorer is making a new start in England.
It already looked like a farewell, now it’s official: Lea Schüller is leaving FC Bayern in the winter and joining English first division club Manchester United. The double winner announced this on Monday. For Schüller, it is the first stop abroad after the German national player moved from SGS Essen to Munich in 2020. Her contract with Bayern would have expired at the end of the season and, according to media reports, Munich will receive a low six-figure transfer fee. In Manchester she will receive a contract until 2029, as the English announced.
In a statement on the Bayern website, Schüller said: “Munich has really become my home for me. The team and the club have always been like a second family to me, no matter what season.” Friendships developed there “that will last forever. That’s why it’s particularly difficult to now take the step and leave my home, my friends and my family.”
The 28-year-old is grateful to have experienced “how women’s football has developed in Munich and in Germany over the last few years and what great things have emerged here,” continued Schüller.
Germany’s Footballer of the Year 2022 was no longer regularly first choice in Bayern coach José Barcala’s team. With a change, the 82-time national player (54 goals) also wants to improve her position in the selection of national coach Christian Wück. Schüller lost her place there to Giovanna Hoffmann during the European Championships. After the Leipzig player tore her cruciate ligament, Wück recently preferred Frankfurt’s Nicole Anyomi as a striker.
The move from Munich was therefore indicated. After the last game of the year, a 3-0 win in Leverkusen, Schüller was unable to take part, but he tearfully applauded the Bayern fans afterwards.
