Late loss against PSV results in AZ Conference League

AZ can prepare for playing in the Conference League. The Alkmaarders lost at home due to a late goal by Xavi Simons 1-2 against PSV. As a result, fourth place and the Conference League is the final station for AZ.

The top match between AZ and PSV was not full of great opportunities in the first half. After a few small pinpricks, the Alkmaarders got the best opportunity. Myron van Brederode found Vangelis Pavlidis. Face to face with Walter Benítez, he did not hit. Moments later, a hard shot from Tijjani Reijnders passed in front of PSV’s goal. He will hear tomorrow whether he is in the final selection of Orange. Just before the break, Guus Til also had a chance on the opening goal, but headed just over.

It was Xavi Simons who gave PSV the lead after the break. He only went towards goalkeeper Mathew Ryan from a counter and simply hit: 0-1. Partly due to Ajax’s backlog, AZ had a good chance to take over third place. Because of that goal against, that goal became increasingly difficult for the Alkmaarders.

The hopes of the home team came back in the final phase. After a foul on Riechedly Bazoer, AZ received a penalty kick. This was used by Jesper Karlsson: 1-1. PSV had to continue with ten men after a red card for Anwar El Ghazi, but still went to Eindhoven with the victory. Simons went deep into injury time, minute 98, towards the goal and hit: 2-1. Due to the defeat, the Conference League remains for AZ next season.

Setup AZ: Ryan; Sugawara, Beukema (Bazoer/77), Hatzidiakos, Kerkez; Clasie, Mijnans (Mihailovic/68), Reijnders; Van Brederode (Lahdo/68), Pavlidis (D. De Wit/76), Karlsson
