What is the grandchildren’s law?
It is a law approved in October 2022 that allows the children and grandchildren of Spaniards of origin to access Spanish citizens directly, even if they were born outside Spain. It was designed to repair unfair situations that forced thousands of families to emigrate for political or economic reasons.

Who can access?
- Grandchildren of Spaniards who emigrated and lost nationality.
- Children of Spanish women who lost citizenship for marrying foreigners.
- Children of legal age of those who were nationalized by the Historical Memory Law (2007).
- Children of Spaniards born outside Spain by political, ideological exile or persecution.
- While the law mentions until the offspring of grandchildren, it is possible to transmit it beyond the grandchildren
It is essential to know the data of the Spanish ancestor, his name, date and exact place of his birth.
What benefits does Spanish citizenship have?
- Access to the citizenship of the European Union: you can live, work and study in any EU country without visa; Access to health systems, education and social benefits from European countries.
- European passport: free circulation in all countries of the European Union.
- Easier family regrouping and possibility of helping your children in the future.
- You do not have to give up your current nationality: Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, Chile and many other countries allow double citizenship.
- No need to live in Spain: you can start the process from your country of residence.
