After FC Bayern, Borussia Dortmund also leaves the club World Cup. BVB sports director Lars Ricken draws a satisfied conclusion after the 2: 3 against Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.
Borussia Dortmund left the club World Cup in the quarter-finals-and yet a positive feeling prevails at the club. In the 2: 3 against Real Madrid in East Rutherford, the Bundesliga club was inferior to long distances, but Managing Director Lars Ricken rated the appearance in the United States as a success.
“We represented the BVB, the city of Dortmund and the Bundesliga at the FIFA club World Cup,” said Ricken of the German Press Agency after the game. Even if that hurts against the Spanish record champion, the 48-year-old takes a proud record. “We are eighth in the European ranking, were in the quarter -finals of the Champions League and now in the top eight in the world. That is impressive,” said Ricken. “Internationally, no German team has been better than us in the past two years.”
Financially, the tournament in the USA was also a profit: BVB took around 45 million euros in prize money from FIFA. Around three million euros of them were paid to the players as premiums. Ricken also hopes for a long -term effect for the team: the time in the USA may have strengthened cohesion.
For BVB we went back to Germany in the evening after the game. “The players are getting a vacation now. And then we all start together with the preparation for the coming season. This is an advantage over the past years,” said Ricken.
Ricken was also satisfied with the game against Real, in which Dortmund had been inferior to the turbulent final phase for a long time. “We didn’t play a bad game today, never gave up, in the end it was even spectacular, Marcel Sabitzer had the huge chance of 3: 3,” said Ricken. “But Real Madrid was more effective and clearer in the crucial moments. We recognize this and congratulate you on progress.”
