Serious injury: Olympic dream shattered for ski star

Swiss ski racer Lara Gut-Behrami recently fell during training. The association has now announced the diagnosis – and with it the end of the season for the 2022 Olympic champion.
She wanted to attack at the Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo next year, but that won’t happen for Lara Gut-Behrami. The Swiss ski racer seriously injured her left knee in a training fall at Copper Mountain in the USA. As the Swiss Ski Association announced on Thursday, she tore her cruciate ligament, medial ligament and meniscus and needs surgery.
The procedure will take place next week. For the two-time world champion and 2022 Super-G Olympic champion, this means the early end of the season. According to head coach Beat Tschuor, the Winter Olympics next year were “Lara’s last big career goal”. Tschuor emphasized that the failure was “of course serious”.
Gut-Behrami has now postponed her plans to end her career after this winter. The Swiss explained on Instagram: “My goal is to fully recover from this injury and return to my full performance. Only then will I know what the future has in store for me.”
Despite the serious injury, the overall World Cup winner appeared to be composed. Although she imagined the next few months to be “completely different,” she didn’t want to overdramatize the situation. “Recently we have experienced dramatic events in our sport, fatal accidents involving young athletes. I believe that a knee injury, no matter how complex it may be, cannot be viewed as a tragedy,” said Gut-Behrami.
