LaLiga: Girona disenchants FC Barcelona – game canceled in Granada

Outsider storms to the top

Outsiders FC Girona continue to cause a sensation in the Spanish LaLiga. The surprise team won 4:2 (2:1) at FC Barcelona on Sunday and took back the top of the table. Girona is now two points ahead of record champions Real Madrid, who did not get beyond a 1-1 draw at Real Betis Sevilla on Saturday. Barça is already seven points behind Girona.

Artem Dovbyk (12th minute), Miguel Gutiérrez (40th), Valery Fernández (80th) and Cristhian Stuani (90th + 5th) scored the victory for the guests. Goal scorer Robert Lewandowski equalized for the defending champions (19th). DFB captain Ilkay Gündogan also scored for the Catalans in stoppage time (90+2).

“We didn’t play a bad game, it’s a hard blow for us. Congratulations to Girona. They are no longer a surprise, they are a candidate for the title. The difference was the strength in defense and the lack of effectiveness,” summarized Barça coach Xavi. “You have to give Girona credit for what they do. (…) They are seven points ahead of us and that is well deserved.”

After the death of a fan: LaLiga game abandoned in Granada

The game between Granada FC and Athletic Bilbao was abandoned after 18 minutes on Sunday after the death of a fan in the stands. “The entire Granada family would like to express their sincere condolences to the family and friends (of the deceased; editor),” said the hosts. According to Spanish media, a 64-year-old man suffering from cancer and undergoing chemotherapy suffered a cardiac arrest. The league also expressed its condolences and announced that the game would continue on Monday evening at 9 p.m.

At the time the game was abandoned, Bilbao was leading 1-0 thanks to a goal from Iñaki Williams (6th minute). Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simón ran to the referee in the 15th minute after Granada fans alerted him to the medical emergency. The referee then interrupted the game. The team doctors from both teams also left their benches and tried to help along with other medical staff. After almost an hour of interruption and the death being announced, it was decided not to restart the game.
