Kosovo postpones fines to Serbs for two days

Kosovo will wait another 48 hours before introducing fines for Serbian residents of Kosovo who drive in the country with Serbian license plates. That writes Kosovo President Albin Kurti on Twitter on Tuesday. He agrees with the request of the US ambassador to his country to once again seek a diplomatic solution to the conflict with Serbia.

Kosovo has forced the Serbian minority, whose cars are often registered in Serbia, to replace their old number plates, and is about to enforce that obligation with fines. Serbia, which took the same measure against Kosovo number plates ten years ago and does not recognize Kosovo as a country, opposed it. The license plate rule has been at the center of new tensions between the two countries for two years now.

On Monday, negotiations led by the EU and the United States stalled. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell warned of “escalation and violence” after the talks ended. “I think there is responsibility on both sides for the failure of the talks.”
