Koopmansplein will turn into a large beach this week. Especially for the so-called beach week unload eleven trucks of sand to build a playing field. “It should be a kind of beach arena,” says organizer Justus de Groot of Assen Actief.
All week long, the square in the center of Assen is all about beach volleyball and football. “Today we are busy with the construction, tonight the handball and football clubs from Assen and Rolde will play sports here,” says De Groot.
There are also all kinds of clinics for primary and secondary schools on the program in the coming days. There are also school and company tournaments.
On Friday afternoon, the beach field is a large sandbox, when toddlers and preschoolers are allowed to play there. There is a real beach cinema on Saturday. “We have a large screen on which a film is broadcast. You can watch a film on a beanbag or in a beach chair.”
“And on Sunday is the final part,” says the organizer enthusiastically. “Then the top players of Dutch beach volleyball come here to play their matches from the Premier League. They visit twelve cities, including Assen.”
When you talk about Assen and sand, you would rather think of Baggelhuizerplas than Koopmansplein. Not a crazy thought, since the event was held at the lake last year.
But in the years before that, Beach Week Assen was also on Koopmansplein. A logical place, says De Groot.
“We would like a connection with the center and with the residents. People who go to the city this weekend can stay and watch,” he says.
Grandstands will also be set up around the playing field. The public can visit the event for free.
