Klopp is promoting an extension with Matip

Team manager Jürgen Klopp has promised his seriously injured defender Joel Matip that he will continue to work at Liverpool FC.

Klopp said on Friday that he would recommend that the club extend the 32-year-old’s contract, which expires in the summer, “but that is not my decision, I cannot sign the papers.” Matip tore his cruciate ligament.

“I’m pretty sure,” Klopp said, “that the club will show its class, as it should.”

Those responsible had certainly already assured Matip that, he added. “This is a normal thing. He deserves our support and will get it.”

Matip has been playing for Liverpool since 2016. The former Schalke player played 201 competitive games (eleven goals) for the Reds, with whom he won the Champions League in 2019 and became English champions in 2020.
