The governor of Utah, Spencer Cox, explained that the alleged shooter in the case of the murdered right activist Charlie Kirk during of his detention “not cooperated”.
“He didn’t stand. He does not cooperate, but cooperates all the people in his environment. And I think that is very important,” said Cox on Sunday in “ABC’s This Week”.
The authorities had arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with the crime last week after his father confronted him with photos of the alleged shooter. “Tyler, are that you? It looks like you,” the father asked his son. With his encouragement, Robinson faced the police on Thursday evening.
Investigations and possible motives
Cox explained that against Robinson on Tuesday.
According to reports from the “New York Times”, Robinson was struggling to Discord with friends after the crime, he was the shooter. “All we can confirm is that these conversations definitely took place, and nobody believed that he really was. It was all a joke – until he finally admitted that he was actually,” said Cox.
On CNN, the governor was also asked about reports that Robinson lived with a transparent roommate. “I can confirm that. The FBI also confirmed that,” said Cox. He added that the roommate was very cooperative and had no idea about Robinson’s plans.
Political classification
In the “Wall Street Journal”, Cox had previously said that the shooter was “indoctrinating deeply from left ideology”. When asked by Martha Raddatz’s program, he said that this information came from well -known and family members of Robinson.
“I don’t have a dog in this fight,” said Cox. “If it had been a radicalized Maga supporter, I would have said it the same way. But his friends don’t report that.”
To Robinson’s attitude towards Charlie Kirk, Cox only said: “No fan. I can’t say anymore.”
Reactions and concerns about radicalization
Many on the right, including Donald Trump, quickly blamed the political left. Cox showed understanding for the anger: “President Trump is very angry. Charlie was his close friend. I felt that too. But more important for me is the topic of radicalization.”
Cox was particularly concerned about how a young man with very good school grades and a scholarship could get so far: “We have to understand how something like this could happen and find out how we prevent it.”
According to the “New York Times”, Robinson is independent and registered as “inactive” in the voter registers – he did not take part in the 2024 presidential election. What Robinson actually believed could be far more complex than a simple left-right assignment.
