King Charles kicks off climate summit with reception at Buckingham Palace | Abroad

Under pressure from then British Prime Minister Liz Truss, Charles, who has been committed to the climate for years, canceled his participation in the summit in Egypt. When Truss took over from predecessor Boris Johnson, she removed the issue of environmental protection from the agenda. At the insistence of her parliamentary group, Truss has since resigned after two months as prime minister.

Yet Charles will not descend to Egypt. A government spokesman said on Thursday that current Prime Minister Sunak would not prevent the king from participating, but that it is too late for that. Organizing the trip now would be “logistically not feasible”.

The COP27 climate summit will start on November 6 in the seaside resort of Sharm el-Sheikhdaar. Representatives from about 200 countries will spend two weeks debating how to control global warming.
