Kiel Week: Unstable winds slow down Olympic sailors

As of: 06/22/2022 7:32 p.m

Unstable winds slowed down the Olympic sailors at the 128th Kiel Week on Wednesday. They waited in vain for a start.

Due to very light and fluctuating winds, the races in the eight Olympic disciplines were postponed to Thursday after a long wait. “After the great sailing the day before, it was a bit of a shame that the unstable winds didn’t allow it any more on Wednesday. But for Thursday we expect increasingly better winds and then sail one more race per class,” explained Kieler Woche sports director Dirk Ramhost.

The sea sailors were able to finish at least one race. That was enough to end the Kiel Cup series after six races. Jens Kuphal’s team from Berlin won on the “Intermezzo”. “It was great sailing days in Kiel, on which we experienced all kinds of weather. We really liked the flexible formats. Our key to success is that we have been sailing with the same crew for three years,” said Kuphal. His team includes Robert Stanjek from Berlin and Max Gurgel from Hamburg. The crew around skipper Ralf Lässig on “Xenia” from the Wulsdorf water sports club took second place among the large boats. Third place went to Michael Berghorn’s “halbtrocken 4.5” from the Kiel Yacht Club.

In the smaller division, Knut Freudenberg’s “halbtrocken” from the Flensburg Sailing Association won ahead of Torsten Bastiansen’s “Xen” (Flensburg) and Jochen-P. Kunze’s “Sophus” from the Langballigau Yacht Club.
