Ex-TSG professional about “brutal” joy

Despite the relegation battle in the Bundesliga, defensive veteran Kevin Vogt is “brutally” looking forward to his new phase of life at 1. FC Union Berlin. The offer from Köpenick was “special” for him, explained the 32-year-old after his first starting eleven for Union in the 0-0 draw at SC Freiburg. “It triggered something in me,” said Vogt about the Berlin offer. “I had a good gut feeling. I wouldn’t have gone to every club. That was also the appeal of Union Berlin.”

He can understand the question of why he decided to make the move despite Union’s relegation battle and his regular place at TSG Hoffenheim. It was “a journey out of the comfort zone,” said the father of a small daughter about the decision made “collectively” with his partner. “I was told it was a great city,” said Vogt. The atmosphere that he experienced as a guest in the An der Alten Försterei stadium was “impressive”.

Of course, the salary and the contract term – about which the Union did not provide any information – would also have played a role. “But I think that even without the contract I would have managed to ensure that my daughter always has food and drink on the table,” he reassured. When asked whether his contract also applies to the 2nd league, Vogt replied: “I think every Bundesliga contract applies to the 2nd league. But I’m not concerned with that.”

Union Berlin: Kevin Vogt was thrown into the deep end against SC Freiburg

Vogt played right from the start in Freiburg, although his substitution was only completed on Thursday. Despite his experience, it was an “adventure” given how hard it was to get used to, he admitted. With Vogt, the Köpenickers scored their first away point since their only win away from home at the end of August (4-1 in Darmstadt). For the first time this Bundesliga season, Union kept a clean sheet away from home.

“Of course it could be better. “Of course there was a bit of uncertainty,” said Vogt. The team became braver in the second half. He is totally optimistic about the relegation battle.
