“If you go down to Memphis/ Please don’t go swimming in the Mississippi River”: On his inspirational excursion, Kevin Morby visited the place where Jeff Buckley drowned (“A Coat Of Butterflies”). He also made a pilgrimage to Graceland, another prominent interface to impermanence, which the American pondered so much that his seventh album was born from it.
Much more than sepia melancholy
“This Is A Photograph” is much more than sepia-colored melancholy and understands the preservation of the powerful snapshot as the nucleus of resilience. Morby treads the idyllic paths between Americana, such as the banjo-laced duet “Bittersweet, TN”, singer-songwriter nostalgia and indie rock, garnished with field recordings of his journey. Beautiful!
