After a family bereavement, midfielder Kevin Kampl’s future at Bundesliga club RB Leipzig is completely open. The 35-year-old has not played for the club since last September. “Kevin can decide for himself how long he needs, what he wants to do, together with the family. We have given him the time,” said coach Ole Werner on the sidelines of the game against Bayer Leverkusen on the TV channel “Sky”. Kampl has been under contract with RB since 2018.

According to sports director Marcel Schäfer, “several options are on the table”. But no decision has been made yet. “In the last few weeks we have had several open, very confidential, honest conversations with Kevin – about the really, very special circumstances and his family situation,” said Schäfer. “For us, the most important thing, and that’s what we’ve handled over the last few weeks, is the well-being of Kevin and his family.” A few weeks ago, Kampl reported on the loss of his brother and thanked him for his sympathy.
