Harris reiterated Biden’s message to China that the two countries must “keep the lines of communication open to manage competition between the countries,” an official said.

The meeting comes less than a week after US President Biden met Xi Jinping on Monday on the sidelines of the G20 summit on the Indonesian island of Bali.

Biden and Xi tried to ease tension between the superpowers during their three-hour meeting. Biden said there is no need for a new Cold War, and Xi Jinping agreed that China has no intention of “changing the existing international order”.
