Kalush Orchestra disappointed that Song Contest will not take place in Ukraine, organization stands behind its decision | Music

MusicKalush Orchestra, the winners of the Eurovision Song Contest, are disappointed that the music festival will not take place in Ukraine next year. The group made this known in an interview with ‘Metro UK’. “I’m disappointed. We had hoped that the Eurovision Song Contest could take place in Ukraine next year,” said Oleg Psyuk, the band’s frontman.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the umbrella organizer behind the event, has no plans to change its mind. In a statement, the organization said it still stands behind its decision. According to the organizer, it is their job to ensure that the event can run safely. “Normally, at least 10,000 people are accredited to work on or at the Song Contest, including crew, staff and journalists. An additional 30,000 fans from around the world are expected to travel to the event. Their well-being is our top priority.”

Pain in the heart

In the statement, the EBU also refers to the official rules of the competition, which state that the Song Contest can be moved ‘in a situation of force majeure’, such as an ongoing war. The organizers also sought advice from third parties. For example, Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of NATO, believes that the war ‘could go on for years’. According to the EBU itself, no major concerts will take place in Ukraine in 2023. “All of that contributes to our overall rating.” The organizers say they understand the disappointment of Ukraine and that they have made the decision with a heavy heart.

Last week, the umbrella organizer European Broadcasting Union announced that they do not consider it safe to organize the event because of the war in Ukraine. The organizer also announced that they are currently in talks with British broadcaster BBC, the number two this year. However, according to British media, there is also another possibility: Brussels, the capital of Europe.
