Jurendic leaves Maaßen’s future open – weakest FCA points average since 1995

“We are in the red”

Sports director Marinko Jurendic left the future of coach Enrico Maaßen at FC Augsburg open after the home defeat against SV Darmstadt, but did not rule out a separation. “We will not publicly discuss the personal details of employees, including the head coach,” said Jurendic on Saturday evening after the 1-2 defeat in the Bundesliga. Maaßen will still be the FCA coach at least “tomorrow”.

Those responsible at the Bundesliga club are also aware of their responsibility for the “big picture,” said Jurendic, who has been the sports director in Augsburg since August. He also referred to the mechanisms of the football business. “Personally, I have to let it sink in,” he said and, after five points from the first seven league games, he clearly stated: “The trend is pointing downwards. We are in the red.” The game was “in essence, brutally disappointing”.

Maaßen is in his second season as head coach in Augsburg, his contract runs until June 2025. He currently has the weakest points average for an FCA coach since 1995 (statistics). It seems very questionable that Maaßen will still be on the FCA bench after the international break in the game against newly promoted FC Heidenheim.

The 39-year-old wants to “continue to do everything I can to be the coach here,” as he said in the press conference after the defeat. But he assessed the situation realistically: “I am responsible for ensuring that the team plays successful football, that they play respectable football.” Neither was the case against Darmstadt. He described the first half as “unacceptable”.
