World Champion 2014, title with BVB and Bayern: Mats Hummels is one of the big ones in German football – also find companions.
National coach Julian Nagelsmann recognized Mats Hummels as a “role model for an entire generation of defenders” who “set international standards in his best years”. “He was not only an outstanding central defender in the national team and interpreted his position in a modern way,” said Nagelsmann after Hummels announced his end of his career for summer.
Under Nagelsmann, Hummels completed his 78th and last international match in November 2023. The national coach did not nominate him for the home European Championships 2024. “He was always noted what it meant to play for Germany. His experience and tactical understanding also benefited many players after the 2014 World Cup title win,” said Nagelsmann now: “The national team has a lot to do.”

DFB sports director Rudi Völler added: “Mats Hummels was one of the formative faces in a very successful time of the national team and the DFB. He had a leading part in these successes, but also as an identification figure away from the square. In his successful career, he shaped his clubs-with the end of one of the largest club in the most beautiful city in the world.” Hummels ended his career at AS Rome in May, for which Völler once played.
DFB President Bernd Neuendorf also paid tribute to the merit of the defense player, who had moved to Italy to Italy before the season of Borussia Dortmund. “Mats Hummels was also a real leadership in the national team. He always took responsibility on and off the square. We are very grateful for his great services to German football, crowning the 2014 World Cup title,” said Neuendorf.

Forever Borusse! Forever a black and yellow legend!” Ex-Mit player Nico Schlotterbeck commented: “Teacher, all the best for the future, my best.”
