For years, Jörg Schmadtke was in charge of affairs in Hanover, Cologne and Wolfsburg. He most recently worked in Liverpool. Will the next stop abroad now follow?
Jörg Schmadtke is apparently being discussed as a manager at Austria Vienna. As the Austrian newspaper “Kurier” reports, Jürgen Werner, of all people, brought the 61-year-old into conversation. Werner only left his position as sports director at Austria in August. Since then, the traditional Austrian club has been looking for a suitable successor. Until then, sports director Manuel Ortlechner will be the head of the club’s sports management.
According to the “Kurier”, Werner had the right to make proposals in his contract. The supervisory board does not have to follow this suggestion, but it cannot exercise a second veto if Werner makes a second attempt with another candidate. There is no official confirmation of this contractual clause.
Schmadtke is Werner’s desired solution, which could now be discussed. The pressure at Austria is definitely high. In the table, the “Viola”, as the club is also called because of its purple club color, is only in fifth place, four points behind arch-rivals Rapid Vienna.
Yesterday, Sunday, Austria even suffered a 3-0 home defeat against Red Bull Salzburg. In the fight for the league title, the Viola are currently only given an outside chance, which was not unusual despite the 24 championships in the club’s history.
It is not yet known whether Schmadtke can also imagine working in Vienna. His previous station was Liverpool FC, where he was sports director for nine months from summer 2023 to spring 2024 at the request of team manager Jürgen Klopp.
