After the failure of Angelo Stiller, Julian Nagelsmann nominated another professional for the DFB team. But that could now also break away the national coach.
Just a few days ago, Jonathan Burkardt was nominated by national coach Julian Nagelsmann for the DFB team for the final four tournament of the Nations League. The striker of Mainz 05 was supposed to replace Angelo Stiller, who laboratories on a ligament injury. But now he may also face a forced break.
As the “Bild” reports, Burkardt had to stop the first training session early on Friday afternoon in Herzogenaurach. The 24-year-old was treated by the DFB medical staff in the tunnel of the Adi-Dassler stadium on the right ankle. Shortly thereafter, he limp into a shuttle car, is said to have left the training ground, as it says.
A Burkardts’ failure would certainly be bitter for Nagelsmann, the national coach with the injured Gladbacher Tim Kleindienst is already lacking his most accurate striker. However, alternatives are ready. With debutant Nick Woltemade from VfB Stuttgart and his teammates Deniz Undav and West Ham attacker Niclas Füllkrug, three other players could act in the forefront. None of them were as accurate as Burkardt last season. The Mainz leader scored a strong 18 goals in the Bundesliga.
Germany will face Portugal in the semi-finals of the Nations League in Munich next Wednesday (from 9 p.m. in the live ticker at T-Online). A possible finale would then be on June 8th, also in Munich. In the event of a defeat, the game for third place in Stuttgart would be on the program for the DFB team on the same day.
