A long career in front of Finnish basketball John Simon (1943-2025) is dead.

The Finnish basketball community has lost a beloved and significant influencer. Born in the United States, Simon is particularly known for his work in the Vantaa club in the pouches, where he served as a coach, board member and chairman for decades, the Basketball Association says in his announcement.

In 1984, Simon moved to Finland with his Finnish wife and children. He did his day job at the Kone Information Department, but the heart took the basketball. In Vantaa, he found a community where he gave almost his entire life to build.

Above all, the young people and their development were close to Simon’s heart. He helped numerous Finnish players continue their studies and basketball career in the United States. In Pussihuk, he attracted young players and coaches, to whom he wanted to give the opportunity to grow, not only as athletes but also as human beings.

Simon’s activities were not limited to basketball. He was involved in the cultural and community life of Vantaa, including the organization of the “Back to the 60s” concerts of Myyrmäki-Hall and the charity event after the bomb attack of Myyrmann. He actively worked for the community of the Kivistö area.

In 2001, he was awarded the Heikki Tuomala Medal of the Basketball Association for his exceptional contribution to Finnish basketball.
