With his victory in Frimley Green, Van Schie followed in the footsteps of the other Dutch winners Raymond van Barneveld, Jelle Klaasen and Christian Kist.
Van Schie won in the final against 15-year-old Mitchell Lawrie. He made up for a 3-0 deficit in sets and took the victory 6-3 after a great comeback. Van Schie was seeded number 1 and was considered the top favorite for the title in advance. Van Barneveld won four world titles at the Lakeside Country Club.
