JEZ!-Festival week. “8 out of 10 members are ‘underprivileged’, but can do extra jobs for membership fees”: 2,000 young people on waiting list at football club that puts school results first | inland

“My football club made sure I could keep up with maths and French.” Amin (18) grabs his chances at the City Pirates: a club where young football players are not only guided by trainers, but also by social workers. No less than 1500 youth players dream of professional football here. But the club puts school first. And yet they have 2000 young people who can no longer access it. “The most poignant compliment: we have more young people on the waiting list than members.”
