Jessie J announced on Instagram that breast cancer was diagnosed in her early stage. The 37-year-old wants to undergo surgery this month-right after her planned appearance at Summertime Ball in the London Wembley Stadium.
“Cancer is terrible in every form, but I stick to the word ‘early’,” she explained in an emotional video message on Instagram. The “Price Tag” singer said that she had been “constantly in investigations” lately.
The diagnosis gave her a new view of life. “But to be honest I have to process this first, talk about it … and I just need a hug,” she said her feelings and thoughts with her fans. “It breaks my heart that so many people have similar or even worse experiences. That is what strikes me the most.”
Open words to encourage others
Jessie J, who became known worldwide through songs such as “Domino” and “Bang Bang”, emphasized that she had deliberately decided to publicly share her diagnosis – on the one hand, in order to be able to deal with it better, on the other hand, on the other hand to encourage others. In 2023 she gave birth to her first child.
“I just wanted to be open and share it. To be honest, I don’t talk enough about it. I work so hard that I hardly process it,” said the British. “But I also know how much sharing has helped me in the past – with your support, your stories. I am an open book.”
The singer was recently announced as a participant in the British Festival “Radio 2 in the Park” in September. She left open whether she will appear there. Despite the severity of the news, she kept her humor: “This is a very dramatic reason to have a breast surgery made,” she joked. “After the Summertime Ball, I will first disappear to let myself be operated on – and come back with huge breasts and new music.”
Wave of support from celebrities
Under the Instagram post, numerous companions and fans came up with encouraging words. Moderator Gaby Roslin wrote: “A lot of love and huge hugs.”
Rita Ora commented: “You are literally my favorite person. I pray for you – you can do it! My mother had it too, and I know how mentally demanding an operation or treatment can be. I am there for you. X.” Leona Lewis, Rochelle and Marvin Humes as well as Wretch 32 also expressed their support.
Health challenges are not new to Jessie J
Jessie J had to deal with health problems earlier: as a child, a heart disease was diagnosed with her, and she suffered a stroke as a teenager. After a miscarriage in 2021, she gave birth to her first child in 2023. In 2020 she temporarily lost her hearing due to the Menière disease. In 2023 she also announced that ADHD and obsessive -compulsive disorders (OCD) were found.
Despite health setbacks, Jessie J recently received an offer for a major role in Broadway: she was supposed to play Sally Bowles in the musical “Cabaret”. But she declined: “It was simply not the right time. My son was still too young and I couldn’t accept it. I will do it at some point – the audition was great and I was proud that I got the role.”
