In late 2024, musician Jesse Markin and his spouse were suspected of grossly abusing their newborn baby. In November of last year, the prosecutor decided that no charges would be filed against Markin or his spouse.
Decisions not to prosecute for aggravated assault were made on the basis of “no evidence”.
Markin has written a book about his experience Snakes and butterflieswhich will be released in early May. He sheds light on the reasons for writing the book in his Instagram update.
– Why did such a book have to be made? Because I know that incorrect assumptions and flimsy diagnoses can start to live a life of their own, and overshadow the future of the child in the center and of this family. And yet no one takes responsibility when the assessments are wrong and leave lasting marks, says Markin.
He wonders how often the authorities ask what if they themselves are wrong. Markin also thinks about how many families have to be broken up before someone admits that the system can also make mistakes.
– This book was born out of the need to protect my family and others who are just drifting into the same vortex. With the book, I hope that no one would have to experience what we and countless others have had to experience.
– The truth can be uncomfortable. But only when we face it can we truly understand and grow.
The book was originally supposed to be Markin’s biography, but according to the introductory text, it became “a fight for innocence and the child’s return home, against the Finnish legal system”.
Jesse Markin is a musician whose debut album was released in 2019. In 2020, he participated in Dancing with the Stars. In 2024, he competed in the New Music competition with his song Glow.
