Jennifer (28) has recently become the proud owner of dentures. “You can just see me laughing now without my hand covering my mouth.” Yet her temporary teeth are only an intermediate step; her teeth are all pulled. Rock stuff
Jennifer knew immediately that she would spend part of the money on her teeth. Due to the cancer in her youth – she had surgery at the age of three, ten and twelfth and then received chemotherapy for a year – her body had to endure a lot. “The chemo was necessary, but of course it’s rubbish. It made my teeth very brittle; they deteriorated and broke off more quickly.”
It made her very insecure. “In the beginning it was mainly at the back of my teeth, but later at the front,” says Jennifer. “I was ashamed and preferred to keep my mouth closed as much as possible so that people didn’t see my bad teeth. I asked the dentist if anything could be done. He said: ‘Your teeth can no longer be saved, the best option is complete dentures’. That costs so much money, so it wasn’t easy.”
In a knot
How lucky that Jennifer recently won an award. “Of course you hope for that when you play in the Friends Lottery, but you don’t expect it to actually happen. When I got the call that I had won a prize, I thought it was strange. I’m very close to my parents, so I immediately called my mother. She said, “Maybe you won a car?” When a famous Dutch person shows up at your door – Ambassador Leontine Ruiters – you know it’s serious. But I never expected so much money, I was speechless!”
Not only Jennifer and her husband – together the proud parents of two daughters aged four and one – were overjoyed. The presentation of the check for 25,000 euros was also a wonderful moment for Jennifer’s parents. “Their lives were turned upside down when they heard that I, then a toddler, had cancer. All the attention went to me, which is why I remained an only child. My parents know how much I was in trouble with myself about those teeth. It’s good for them that I can get something done about it.”
Fake
Jennifer called her dentist for an appointment the day after she won. A week later her teeth were extracted. “I woke up with beautiful teeth,” she says. “A prosthesis, but still. I don’t have to pay so much attention now, I no longer have to put my hand in front of my mouth when I talk to people. My teeth may be fake, but my smile is real!”
