Former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra was hospitalized over the weekend after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke, in which the left side of his body became completely numb.
The 67-year-old punk rocker, known for his outspokenness, reassured his fans that his condition is stable and he is recovering in hospital. “I still have a lot of great things left in me, but there’s a lot of rehab on the agenda right now,” Biafra wrote in an Instagram post he shared Monday night.
Biafra – whose real name is Eric Boucher – said the stroke was caused by high blood pressure and occurred as he tried to get up on Saturday evening. “My left leg just gave out and I fell to the ground,” Biafra said. “I couldn’t even break the fall with my left arm because it no longer worked either. I tried to get back up – and couldn’t.”

Despite his situation, he displayed his trademark humor and added: “I realized that I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” – a reference to the infamous commercials for the Life Alert medical emergency system.
The independent label Alternative Tentacles, which broke the news, said it would continue to provide information about Biafra’s recovery progress. “On behalf of the Alternative Tentacles family, we are all very happy that he is doing well and getting the care he needs,” the post concluded.
Biafra was the lead singer and co-founder of the San Francisco punk band Dead Kennedys – from 1978 until the band’s dissolution in 1986. The group reformed in 2001 without Biafra.
Controversy over Punk in the Park
Last month, Biafra criticized the band’s current lineup for agreeing to perform at this year’s Punk in the Park festival, despite festival owner Cameron Collins’ contributions to Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. “The real Dead Kennedys would never have allowed this to happen in the first place,” Biafra told Stereogum. “Another terrible reason why I never want to play with them again.” (The organizers have since canceled the festival.)
