Jeddah or Mario Kart? Leclerc’s radio team is viral

The Jeddah track finds itself full of bags during the Free Practice of the F1 Arabian GP, and so Leclerc lets slip a… videogame joke.

Formula 1 is back on track after the winter break and the second stop of the Great Circus is Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where the first two free practice sessions are being held today, March 7. Being a street circuit, the Jeddah track is incredibly fast and narrow, with almost zero margin for error.

Leclerc’s misfortune —

Unfortunately for Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, his outings in Free Practice 1 were marked by several obstacles in the form of plastic bags placed on the track. Since these bags can get into the vents of the car, as happened to the Monegasque at Spa two years ago, preventing it from properly using the airflow to cool itself, these bags are a bigger problem than they seem. Avoiding them is made even more difficult by the extremely narrow streets of Jeddah, and so Leclerc found himself with some uninvited passengers who he had to eliminate during a pit stop.

Mario Kart or Jeddah? —

The Ferrari driver did not let himself be discouraged and, speaking to his race engineer, complained half-jokingly. “The track looks like Mario Kart,” said number 16 on the grid. “There are plastic bags everywhere.” Anyone who has played Nintendo’s popular racing title will have caught the reference: in Mario Kart it is in fact necessary to dodge bananas, shells and any other kind of object thrown by the opponents on duty, with comical and annoying effects at the same time.

Curiously, this is not the first time Mario Kart, Saudi Arabia and F1 have appeared together in the same context recently. The Saudis have in fact announced their intention to build a new F1 circuit in Qiddiya, which – due to the banking and the very bright colors of the rendering exhibited by the organizers – has been compared to the iconic Rainbow Track of the game.
