Poor crypto. Anyone who read “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” – the template for the film “Supergirl”, which opens on June 26th – knew what was coming. The just-released trailer confirms it: The story revolves around Supergirl’s desperate attempt to save her beloved dog after the evil alien Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts) hits him with a poisoned arrow. “At least Krypto and I have each other,” says Supergirl (Milly Alcock), aka Kara Zor-El – just before fate strikes.

During early test screenings of Superman last year, audiences were horrified when Ultraman merely beat up Krypto – that scene was ultimately cut. But James Gunn, the film’s director and co-CEO of DC Studios, told Rolling Stone shortly after its release that he was confident fans could handle Krypto’s far greater threat in Supergirl. “Remember: This is a different movie than ‘Supergirl,'” he said. “‘Supergirl’ is a much rockier movie. It’s a little rougher in some ways. She’s a tougher character. She’s not Superman at all. So it’s not the same. This movie is really for everyone. ‘Supergirl’ too – but it’s a little edgier than that in some ways.”

The “Supergirl” trailer, set to Jimmy Ruffin’s 1966 Motown ballad “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted,” provides the most in-depth look yet at Jason Momoa’s portrayal of fan-favorite bounty hunter Lobo – his Beetlejuice-esque snarl and swagger seem straight out of the comics. “Aren’t you the idiot from this dive bar?” Lobo asks Supergirl in the middle of an action sequence.

Lobo meets Supergirl

“Funny, that’s exactly what I call you,” she replies.

“Touché,” Lobo replies.

The trailer also shows David Corenswet as Superman in Supergirl for the first time – in a kind of interplanetary Zoom conversation with Kara, who is far from Earth. “I just wanted to ask when you were coming back,” he says. Also seen is Supergirl’s father Zor-El (David Krumholtz), who puts her in her escape ship as the remnants of Krypton crumble around her.

Director Craig Gillespie said earlier this year that he was excited about the uniqueness of the character portrait. “She brings a lot of baggage and inner demons with her when she comes into this story – that’s fundamentally different from Superman and his period of life,” he said. “The condition she’s in and the journey she’s going through is really surprising.”
