Swedish House Mafia celebrated their comeback in their original constellation at Ultra Miami – for the first time in 20 years, all four members performed together on one stage.
EDM collective Swedish House Mafia made an unexpected comeback at Ultra Festival on Saturday. Because it wasn’t just Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso, who the organizers had announced in the line-up, that excited the fans. The three DJs had planned a small “festival within a festival”: First, they welcomed some friends from the music scene onto the stage as part of their DJ set.
Surprise guests
During the course of the show, Boys Noize got to play his Skrillex collaboration “Fine Day Anthem,” and Kelly Lee Owens played Radiohead’s “Everything in Its Right Place.” Afrojack also performed the song “Give Me Everything” and Armand Van Helden performed some of his songs. But these musicians weren’t the only ones who also appeared as surprise guests.
The third permanent member of the Swedish House Mafia, DJ Axwell, also took the stage – and not alone. At his side, Eric Prydz appeared in the spotlight. Prydz is considered one of the original members of the DJ collective. However, he decided against becoming part of the group when it formed in 2008 under the name Swedish House Mafia and instead pursued a solo career.
The group broke up in 2012 and initially went their separate ways. In 2018, Swedish House Mafia celebrated their big three-piece comeback at Ultra Miami, which they surprisingly announced just 24 hours before the festival began.
Eight years later, they managed to surprise their fans again with a reunion at Ultra Miami.
17 minutes in the original constellation
The four of them played a total of 17 minutes on stage in their original constellation. It started with “Turn On the Lights again..”, a co-op with Fred again.., which led into Eric Prydz’ “Pjanoo”. They then played “Leave the World Behind,” a song by Axwell, Ingrosso and Angello, followed by “It Gets Better,” which was mixed into “Every Day.”
During Prydz’s famous remix “Alone”, Axwell got up to the DJ booth and shouted into the crowd: “Ultra Miami: This guy, Eric Prydz, was once part of the original Swedish House Mafia and always will be. A big round of applause for Eric Prydz!” This makes it clear that the DJs are still connected to this day and enjoy working with each other.
After a few more tracks, Prydz left the stage and the trio played their closing set. Including a tribute to Avicii. A mix of “Don’t You Worry Child” and “Wake Me Up”, which had also once played on the same stage.
Emotional success for all four original members
The comeback was a complete success: The fans danced, laughed, and some were moved to tears by the performance. It was the first time in 20 years that all four original members of the Swedish House Mafia performed together on one stage.
