Jared Leto slips into the skin of Karl Lagerfeld

US pop star Jared Leto stars in the upcoming biopic about Karl Lagerfeld, artistic director of Parisian fashion label Chanel. The fashion eccentric from Hamburg died in February 2019.

The music-making Oscar winner (for his role as transgender Rayon in the drama Dallas Buyers Club) gives Leto the braided glove genius. Successful Australian producer Emma Ludbrook pulls the strings behind the scenes.

“Karl would be proud of us”

“This is the moment when it comes full circle. Karl would be proud of what we’re doing right now,” Leto told Women’s Wear Daily. “Karl was an artist. Fashion designer, photographer, a great man of the world. There was no real box for him. He was just a creative powerhouse.”

The Lagerfeld story is still in development; the director has not yet been determined. So far there are only a few hard facts about the film, but the fashion label Karl Lagerfeld is there with full support. In contrast to the Italian cult brand Gucci, which tried to torpedo the “House of Gucci” film (2021) with all the power of their lawyers.

Jared Jeto told Women’s Wear Daily that the film “draws key relationships into Karl Lagerfeld’s life, told through an incorruptible lens. A design similar to the man himself.”

Leto added, “There’s a wide variety of relationships to explore. Karl can look back on a career spanning more than 50 years, so he was close to many people both personally and professionally. I can say that we will focus on key relationships that convey different parts of his life.”

Precise preliminary work

Word in Hollywood is that Jeto has brought on board three of Lagerfeld’s close confidants, fashion house executive Pier Paolo Righi, senior vice president of image and communications Caroline Lebar, and personal assistant and bodyguard Sébastien Jondeau. All three are listed as “executive producers”.
