The Czech number 89 in the world had little to do against the world ranking leader from the start. Sinner put a 6-1 set position on the scoreboard twice in two times 30 minutes.

In the third set, Kopriva was able to offer something more resistance to the prevailing Italian, but he never got a view of winning in the set. In the end, Sinner needed less than a hundred minutes to assure himself of a place in the second round, even though his opponent served another match point.

Sinner will do the quick victory. He felt so sick last Monday that he gave up in the final of the tournament of Cincinnati. The Italian then declined for the mixed double of the US Open, which was on the program one day later.

Jannik Sinner goes for the third grand slam title of 2025

So far, Sinner stood in all three Grandslam finals of 2025 and only lost that of Roland Garros. So in New York he hopes to win his third Grandlam title of the year after the Australian Open Wimbledon.

Alexander Zverev wins in three sets

Alexander Zverev has reached the second round of the US Open. The third-placed German was too strong in three sets for the Chileen Alejandro Tabilo: 6-2 7-6 (4) 6-4.

The 28-year-old German takes on the Brit Jacob Fearnley in the second round. Zverev lost the final in New York in 2020 and still hunts for his first grand slam title.

“It wasn’t great at all times, but I am through, in three sets, as I wanted. That’s the most important thing,” Zverev said after his victory. “It is also important that I am ready at 1 am and not at 3 am.”
