Jan and Seina turn an inherited transformer house into a holiday paradise

Almost 15 years ago, Jan (76) and Seena (74) Wilting from Wilhelmsoord (a hamlet near Emmen) got their hands on a special heirloom: a real electricity house. Since this spring, there has been a lot of work going on inside and around the tiny structure. Because Jan came up with a completely new destination for it. The transformer house is being transformed into a real holiday home. The first guests are welcome in September.

The tour in the electricity house is viewed in this way. You can walk through it in just two minutes. The cottage is, except for the furnishings, practically ready. There are still bare white walls everywhere, but that will change in the coming weeks, says Jan Wilting. “Here comes the kitchen unit”, he points to a corner. “And there the TV.”

This fills the surface of the original house. For the bathroom and bedroom, Wilting has built a small extension on the east side. “All together it’s about 40 square meters.”

The Wilting family has owned the building, which is located about 50 meters from their home, since 2008. “It was actually an heirloom from my wife’s family,” says Jan. To explain this properly, we have to go back in time. The electricity house was built in 1950 on the property of Mr Scholten, who at the time had to give the land to the electricity company.
