Jadon Sancho’s departure from Manchester United is now official and the Englishman is now on the market. A possible return of the winger is being discussed in Dortmund.

Those in charge at Borussia Dortmund are also likely to be paying close attention to this news: Manchester United is letting ex-BVB star Jadon Sancho’s contract expire and has decided not to exercise the option of an extension. It is now clear that the 26-year-old will leave the “Red Devils” on June 30, 2026 and will then be available on the market for a free transfer.

United announced in an official statement on Tuesday that, in addition to Sancho, the club would also be parting ways with Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia. “Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho are among the players who will be leaving Manchester United as their contracts expire,” the statement said. Reference is also made to Sancho’s time in Manchester: “Jadon Sancho moved to Old Trafford in 2021 and was also part of the team that won the Carabao Cup in 2023. The winger played 83 competitive games for the ‘Red Devils’ before returning to Borussia Dortmund on loan. This was followed by further loan spells at Chelsea FC and Aston Villa.”

The end of an 85 million euro misunderstanding

The club would have had the opportunity to extend Sancho’s contract using a clause and thus achieve a transfer fee. However, this option was not used. “The club would like to thank Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho for their commitment and services to Manchester United and wishes them all the best for their future,” the statement continued.

Sancho moved from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester in 2021 for around 85 million euros. However, in England he was unable to meet the high expectations. In his 83 competitive games for United, he only managed twelve goals and six assists. After a falling out with then coach Erik ten Hag, Sancho returned to BVB on loan in January 2024. Last season he made 39 appearances for Aston Villa, scoring one goal and assisting three more goals. He also won the Europa League with the club in the final against SC Freiburg.

It remains to be seen whether Sancho will return to Dortmund again. BVB’s new sports director, Ole Book, recently spoke cautiously about a possible signing in “Sport Bild”: “Jadon is a good, creative player. And before the question comes: I won’t give up the likelihood of whether we will sign a player.” Internally, it is still being considered whether Sancho would strengthen the team in terms of sport. The fact that the offensive player is available for free after the end of his contract in Manchester could at least be a financial advantage for BVB.
