Jack van Gelder is annoyed with Marcel van Roosmalen. He gets a gag reflex from the way the columnist rants at people. “He’s really, really sad.”

Marcel van Roosmalen comments on current affairs in numerous places. He currently also has a column in the daily program De Oranjezomer. Last week, Jack van Gelder, among others, had to suffer. “He has ruined one of the most beautiful goals ever with his un-Dutch shouting,” he roared.

Marcel demolishes Jack

According to Marcel, Jack’s football commentary is a horror. “And now there are people who want to fly him in immediately to do the Netherlands – Argentina one more time. As if Jack van Gelder brings good luck. As if we win.”

He continues: “Thank God, Jack van Gelder is contractually bound to the House of Orange, a marketing concept of the KNVB whereby they lock up the biggest orange fanatics in the Amsterdam Arena. What hell. If they bomb the Amsterdam Arena during the Netherlands – Argentina, the waiting lists in mental health care will be gone.”

Jack demolishes Marcel

Jack is now hitting back hard at Marcel at the HLF8 talk show table. “I think it’s so annoying when you live life just being negative and sarcastic and being cynical. And if you put your money there… The little money he earns, what he collects with it… It’s just a first-class whiner, but that’s allowed.”

He continues: “He can criticize me, I don’t mind that at all, but luckily a lot of people get a lot of joy from it, so I’m fine with it.”

‘a bit sad’

It is what it is, said Jack. “Not just because of that Bergkamp moment, but there are a lot of people… If I show what requests I have received these days from all over the world, whether I want to talk about the Netherlands – Argentina because I was allowed to play a very small part are of that great moment, then I will take this into the bargain.”

He continues: “I think it’s a bit sad and I think the worst thing is that at one point he almost stalked me when he had a section in the VARA. Would I please have an interview with him. I said, “Why?” He said, ‘Well, it seems so interesting. I think you are such a nice and interesting man, so I think it would be fun.’”

‘It’s not nice’

And then? “At a certain point I thought: what shall I do? Then I canceled on him and ever since then I’ve been fucked. Well, fine.”

Isn’t this just Marcel’s job? “Yes, but I think it’s a shame that he always… He never says anything positive. That seems so annoying, even if you are a critic…”

It’s satire after all: “Oh yes, but I can handle it. I had already seen it yesterday and then I thought: well, fine.”

It seems to work for him anyway. “It’s never fun. I just don’t like it either. That is it.”
