Italy icon Andrea Pirlo takes over Serie A relegated Sampdoria

Italy’s 2006 World Cup champion Andrea Pirlo is the new coach of Serie A relegated Sampdoria Genoa.

The former coach of Juventus Turin and the Turkish first division football team Fatih Karagümrük signed a two-year contract with an option for a third season.

The former midfield star replaces Serbian football coach Dejan Stankovic, who resigned after Sampdoria’s relegation to Serie B.

Sampdoria is Pirlo’s third coaching post after the former World Cup champion was sacked at Juve after just one season in 2021. In May, Pirlo resigned as coach of Karagümrük three games before the end of the season.
