Italian president refuses to resign Prime Minister Draghi | Abroad

Draghi will speak before the Chamber of Deputies next Wednesday. Everything indicates that Draghi will no longer rule. He himself said during the Council of Ministers on Thursday evening that his government no longer has a majority in parliament. Draghi has always said he does not want a new parliamentary majority.

Prime Minister Draghi and the Five Star Movement, which is led by ex-Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, have not had a good relationship for a long time. Several issues come into play, such as the oft-criticized and sometimes abused basic income for the poor, a hobbyhorse for the Five Star Movement which fears it will be offended.

During the vote in the Senate where the Five Star Movement abstained, the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, would be given additional powers to tackle the garbage problem in his city. This is partly due to the establishment of waste incineration plants, which the Five Star Movement is radically opposed to.

Draghi has been prime minister since February 13 last year. He previously gained international fame as governor of the European Central Bank. As Prime Minister of Italy, his main task was to manage the multi-billion-euro European Recovery Fund. It is not yet clear whether there will be early elections. These would otherwise have taken place next year.
