Italian cyclist Enrico Zanoncello has been expelled from the Giro d’Italia. According to the jury, the 28-year-old cyclist from Bardiani collided with his head against Robert Donaldson of Jayco AlUla during the final sprint of the fifteenth stage in Milan. The Briton fell as a result.
Zanoncello veered off his line in the middle of the pack and then hit Donaldson. After viewing the images, the jury decided to disqualify the Italian. He was also fined 500 Swiss francs (549 euros).
What was striking about Zanoncello’s dangerous action was that the sprint was not even about stage victory, but about fifth place.
