The province has issued a negative swimming advice for Swimming Plas Hemelrijkse Waard in Lithoijen because of blue -green algae. These bacteria can cause nuisance and health problems.
Swimming water locations are regularly checked for safety and water quality. If there is a reason for this, the province can set a swimming ban or give a negative swimming advice.
A negative swimming advice means that swimming in the lake in question is not recommended, but – at your own risk – are still allowed. Negative swimming advice is only withdrawn when structural improvement in water quality has been demonstrated.
Blue -green algae
Blue algae occur naturally in the water, but cause nuisance when they are present in large quantities. They make the water cloudy and can separate toxic substances that are harmful to humans and animals. It can also stink and fish can die due to blue -green algae.
