It is tempting to swim in natural water with these high temperatures, but in various places in Brabant it is not recommended due to blue -green algae, the province reports. For example, a negative swimming advice applies to the Rooye Plas in Handel, but you should also not swim in Bergen op Zoom and in places in the Biesbosch.
Since Thursday, the safety and quality of the water has been checked at more than a hundred swimming spots in Brabant. Blue algae are bacteria that can occur in fresh water and cause health problems. Some blue algae are also toxic, reports Rijkswaterstaat. You can get skin irritation and if you get blue algae you can get stomach and intestinal complaints. Small children in particular are vulnerable because they can unconsciously get things (also blue algae) in their mouths.
These bacteria are in the Rooye Plas and therefore the water boards recommend taking a dip there. The negative swimming advice for this place is only withdrawn when the water quality is structurally improved.
There is also too much blue -green algae in the Boulevard Noord inner Scheldt in Bergen op Zoom. The water quality at this swimming place is not good enough for several seasons. There is currently too much blue -green algae at De Tureluur and Akqa in Bergen op Zoom. There too it is not recommended to swim.
A negative swimming advice also applies to a number of places in the Biesbosch, but not because of the water quality. In the water at the Aakvlaai in the municipality of Altena and three other places in the municipality of Drimmelen there is no separation for swimmers. As a result, swimmers can end up between motor boats or jet skis and that is dangerous.
