Is Queen Margareta’s shock decision connected to the deprivation of grandchildren’s titles? The expert answers

Royal expert Sanna-Mari Hovi ponders Margareeta’s motives.

Queen Margareeta of Denmark announced around the New Year that she would abdicate. His son Frederik and his wife Mary will soon be crowned as the new monarch of Denmark.

There has been a lot of discussion about the change of power from many different perspectives. Royal Expert Sanna-Mari Hovi also sees connections in the matter to the Danish court’s previous dispute over titles.

Margareeta removed the royal titles from her four grandchildren in 2022. It concerned the descendants of his younger son Joachim. Since the beginning of 2023, Joachim’s children have been known only by the names of Count or Countess of Monpezat. The titles of prince and princess are no longer used for them.

Although the information about the change of power came unexpectedly, it is possible that the relinquishment of power has already been planned for a long time. Hovi already told Iltalehti earlier that there have been signs of this in the air.

Hovi speculates that perhaps Margareeta ended up removing the Titles in 2022 so her son Frederik wouldn’t have to do it when he was king.

– I would think that this removal of titles has also been preparation. Reducing the size of the king’s rooms is quite an important object of modernizing the king’s rooms. Let’s see that there would be fewer royalties for which the people have to pay, says Hovi.

According to Hovi, even though there was an uproar over the issue, there would have been an even bigger uproar over the removal of the titles if Joachim’s brother Frederik had been the one removing the titles.

– It would have created a bigger halo. Here, Margareeta took, as it were, a nasty thing on her shoulders, which was removed before Frederik came to power.

Frederik said in 2022 that he stood behind his mother’s decision and felt that removing the titles was appropriate. The brothers commented conflictingly on the matter in the media. Frederik pointed out to the Danish media that all families sometimes have conflicts, including theirs.
