Join the conversation

In the podcast Join the discussion with AD we discuss an issue every day. Today is that this: a peace agreement is no longer worth anything these days.

US President Trump has confirmed that there is an agreement between the United States and Iran. He did this during the G7 summit in France. This should put an end to the war in Iran.

Trump calls it a ‘success for the whole world’ preliminary agreement. A.D-foreign reporter Mark van Assen joins the podcast. Is a conversationalist A.Dcolumnist Angela de Jong.

Mark explains why the ‘peace agreement’ is not actually a peace agreement at all: “I wouldn’t dare call it a peace agreement yet. We may call it that because Trump has called it that fifty times. But what they have actually done is made an agreement to make further agreements. There will be a 60-day ceasefire and within that period they will talk about what actually needs to be agreed. So we are not there yet, but it is a start.”

Angela doesn’t know what to think: “Well, what should I say? I think Trump cares enough to ensure that things calm down a bit. So that’s where my hopes are. I wish we could just go back ten years in time and everything would be as it was then.”

The Strait of Hormuz should also reopen. Does this mean that petrol will become cheaper again? Mark: “I wouldn’t dare say so. Those are daily rates, those prices at the pump. If the producers realize that it will take a long time again, then those prices will go up again.”

Angela: “We have so little influence on it. That is very frustrating. On the other hand, you have to keep that in mind, you have no influence on it. So don’t let it ruin your normal day, we will see. And I am going to repeat my pet peeve again: the poor people of Iran.”

Mark: “The only positive thing is that they are talking. In any case, they no longer have their heels in the sand. I don’t know what the ultimate result will be, because there are still some important points on the table. If you ask me, Iran has emerged as the winner at the moment. Nothing came of everything Trump mentioned at the start of the war.”

In her ‘issue of the day’ Angela encourages final exam candidates who are now starting their resits.
