“Intolerant”: BVB boss condemns whistles against Gündogan

The German national soccer team looks back on a bitter friendly defeat against Turkey. Captain Ilkay Gündogan received whistles from the fans of the away team. BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke reacts with incomprehension.

“I think that’s absolutely not okay and I don’t have any understanding for it because it’s simply intolerant,” Watzke told “Bild” in clear words.

Gündogan was booed by Turkish national team fans in the 3-2 defeat at the Berlin Olympic Stadium, particularly in the early stages.

Gündogan decided to play for the German national team

The veteran decided to join the DFB team many years ago. In 2011, the current Barca star made his first senior international match for Germany. Gündogan also previously had the opportunity to play for Turkey. Some supporters of the world number 38. probably still resent the 33-year-old’s decision.

“My grandparents, parents and other relatives still live in Turkey in Izmir, and of course I also have a lot of friends there,” Gündogan emphasized to “SID” before the test match: “I try to go there at least once every year to travel to Turkey. Istanbul is one of my absolute favorite cities in the world and I love Turkish food.”

The captain was part of national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s starting eleven on Saturday evening. From sport.de He received a grade of 4.0 for his performance.

National team: Watzke is not surprised by the mood

In the Olympic Stadium, the fans of the Turkish national team dominated the stands. “That didn’t come as a surprise to me,” said BVB boss Watzke, who also serves as vice-president of the DFB, about the mood.

On Tuesday (8:45 p.m.) the German national soccer team will be playing in Austria in the last international match of the year.
