Eighteen months ago, the sky fell on the head of Professor Dirk De Wachter (62). A serious hemorrhage in Paris turned out to be the precursor of colon cancer. The professor finds solace in art, in literature. He does not give up, but sometimes death creeps close, like a cold draft on his neck: “I still don’t believe there is a heaven. It’s here, between us. When I was in the hospital, a colleague visited me. Only: he was dead. ‘That’s no problem,’ he told me.”
