The Intersport trading association is consolidating its activities in Central and Southeastern Europe. On Thursday, Intersport Austria GmbH announced that it wanted to take over the Intersport Slovenia Group. Financial details of the transaction, which is still subject to antitrust approval, were not disclosed.
“With the acquisition, the Intersport Austria Group will grow to over 500 locations in twelve countries,” the company said. “The group’s external sales have risen to around one billion euros for the first time and are a clear sign of the increasing economic clout in Central and Southeastern Europe.”
The Intersport Slovenia Group is active in eight Southeast European countries
The Intersport Slovenia Group is currently represented in eight Southeast European markets. According to the association, Intersport is the “market leader in Slovenia” and is “also one of the top three sports retailers in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro”. The group is active through franchise partners in Albania, Serbia and North Macedonia as well as in Kosovo.
After the takeover has been completed, a consolidation of the Intersport Slovenia Group “under the umbrella of Intersport Austria GmbH with headquarters in Wels” is planned. Local management remains “on board,” it said in a statement.
Franz Koll, CEO of Intersport Austria, described the planned acquisition as a “strategic milestone” for the company. “With this takeover, we not only secure our relevance in the European sports retail sector, but also create synergies in purchasing, digitalization and logistics,” he explained in a statement. “At a time when size, effectiveness and expertise determine market position, we are sending a strong signal for the future.”
